So long, so long To the moonlight that once shone so softly To the tall grass, growing wild in place of the concrete hollow’s the sound of the planes touching down and I can’t tell the wind from the highway I can’t tell the wind from the highway Year after year I’m cut more and more by the floodplain With the coming of winter They dig in my veins Roots washed away From mud, gas, and cutlines Nowhere to go But the memories of those who are leaving Like silt in a river Cold fire and smoke Brittle and broke There’s plenty more to claim

Pulled into the parking lot Stepped out and took her coat off Looked around for another cigarette She’ll be gone within the hour Road unseen, a call unanswered Dust fills the space between her tires Lives for the metal breathing fire Night falls like the lie she’s living on Another night in a motel room with the blinds drawn Fading fast and dying slow The silence weighs on the road In moonlight she knows that she’s alone Still chasing the memories that are gone Home is where the pain is stronger Each day is a little longer Nothing between despair and drink Prairie winds they howl in mourning For the one they knew when She was not beholden to the world She’s not holding to the world On a day where clouds are heavy Rain’s clean and the highway’s empty Snow in the hills up above Stops the car, waits there a while Tears in her eyes, half-crazed, beguiled Trembling hands for the last mile She’ll numb the pain with a smile
